DUBLIN — Iceland’s clouds of volcanic ash are menacing European air traffic again, but transport chiefs insisted yesterday that they are learning from last month’s crisis and won’t let the hard-to-measure emissions ground their continent again.
Rising volcanic activity spurred aviation authorities in Ireland, northwest Scotland, and the Faeroe Islands to shut down services yesterday after a two-week hiatus. Their airports reopened several hours later, once the densest ash clouds had passed over their airports and back over the Atlantic.
But soon a new wave of engine-damaging ash was approaching British airspace, forcing Britain’s Civil Aviation Authority to announce that airports in Scotland and Northern Ireland had to cancel all services indefinitely, beginning at 7 this morning....
But government and aviation officials from Ireland warned that Iceland, some 900 miles to the northwest, could keep spewing untold tons of engine-destroying ash into air space indefinitely and could keep disrupting flights in Ireland, Britain, and Scandinavia this summer....

Too often so far, the ash from Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokul volcano has ended up traveling with unseasonal winds straight east or southeast into Europe rather than northeast to the uninhabited Arctic, the typical path in springtime....

Iceland’s Institute of Earth Sciences said Eyjafjallajokul — which erupted April 13 after a 177-year slumber — has experienced increased seismic activity since Sunday, and its ash plume has risen to nearly 18,000 feet in altitude. The last time it erupted, in 1821, its emissions ebbed and flowed for two years.
Oh, this could be a PROBLEM for YEARS, huh?

More than a dozen other airports throughout the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland shut down, too, as unseasonable winds pushed the engine-wrecking ash southwest back toward the Atlantic. Britain’s National Air Traffic Service said the densest ash clouds skirted the western coast of England and North Wales but posed no threat to airports there.
The renewed volcanic-ash threat in the skies of Britain and Ireland this week following a two-week lull....
This time authorities are grounding flights only when the ash reaches sufficient density levels and gets within 60 miles of an airport’s path for landings and takeoffs — a stark contrast to last month’s closures of air services throughout several countries....

BRUSSELS — The Icelandic volcano with the unpronounceable name reminded the world again that it has the power to disrupt international travel — coughing out a spreading cloud of ash that delayed or canceled hundreds of flights between Europe and North America yesterday.
The prospects for flights today remained grim, with no improvement in sight for trans-Atlantic passengers, and with a plume of low-altitude ash continuing to float eastward over Spain and southern France. Flights had to be rerouted north over Greenland or south around Spain to avoid the 1,200-mile-long cloud stretching from Iceland to northern Spain....
Until Eyjafjallajokul, the volcano in southern Iceland, stops its emissions, the course of Europe’s ash crisis will depend heavily on the prevailing winds.
And here they are going the WRONG WAY!

The eruption of the glacier-capped volcano has shown no signs of stopping since it began belching ash April 13. It last erupted from 1821 to 1823.

Eurocontrol’s forecast chart of volcanic activity for early today showed a solid line of cloud extending from Greenland to the Azores and Madeira Islands in the mid-Atlantic, at altitudes up to 35,000 feet — right in the path of most trans-Atlantic flights. Due to the congestion on the alternate routes, particularly over southern Portugal and Spain where many of the planes were being funneled, some trans-Atlantic flights were taking significantly longer....

BRUSSELS — A plume of volcanic ash snaked its way through southern France, Switzerland, Italy, and Germany yesterday, shutting down airports and disrupting flights in Europe.
Trans-Atlantic connections were also being diverted around a larger patch of cloud stretching from southern Greenland to the coast of Portugal, adding several hours to flights between Europe and North America and causing congestion as airlines tried to squeeze their planes through remaining routes.

Weather forecasts said the ash cloud hovering over the continent will dissipate as it spreads to southern parts of Germany, the Czech Republic, and Austria.
“We’re expecting rain to thin the cloud, leaving only a small band left by Monday morning,’’ said Daniel Gerstgrasser, meteorologist with Switzerland’s national weather agency. No further ash drifts are expected to reach the continent in the coming 24 hours, he said.
