“Some families reportedly subjected men and women to corrective rape and forced marriages to encourage heterosexual conduct,’’ she said Tuesday.
Homosexuals reported widespread discrimination in 2009, the year under review. But the report notes that the conservative southern African country has long frowned on homosexuality.
Hate speech by politicians against the nation’s small gay community fueled social pressures on families, Porter said. And crimes against human rights and sexual abuse against gays were rarely reported to police.

Same-sex acts are illegal in Zimbabwe and while there have been no reported prosecutions related to consensual homosexuality in recent years, the offense carries a penalty of up to a year in jail or a fine of up to $5,000.

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Bishop Abel Muzorewa, the first black prime minister of an interim white-dominated government before Zimbabwe’s independence, died at his home in Harare Thursday, his family said. He was 85.
Bishop Muzorewa, a Methodist, joined the government of the short-lived Zimbabwe-Rhodesia in a deal with Ian Smith, the last white prime minister, in 1978, two years before the first all-race elections that swept President Robert Mugabe to power and dropped the name of Rhodesia, as the former British colony was known.
In those polls, Bishop Muzorewa’s party won just three of the 80 parliamentary seats against a landslide victory by Mugabe that ended a seven-year guerrilla war. Seen by some as a moderate black leader able to stem Mugabe’s dominance in the fight for independence, Bishop Muzorewa opposed the armed conflict. Black militants saw him as a puppet of white politicians.

Zimbabwe’s last executioner retired after carrying out his last execution in 2004. The departure of the hangman, who was said to be struggling with his conscience, leaves about 50 inmates on death row at Chikurubi maximum security prison outside Harare.

Zimbabwe’s government has learned that finding a replacement is not so easy and, according to a prisoners’ advocacy group, it has even prepared a want ad to help its search.
Meanwhile, calls for abolition of the death penalty have gained steam....

His workplace was inside the Harare Central Remand prison, 12 miles from Chikurubi. The gallows are said to be of scaffolding and wood and appear to date from the pre-independence era.
Records show a total of 78 people have been executed in Zimbabwe since the African country won independence from Britain in 1980.
