"Inmate, six on staff taken to hospital after prison altercation in Shirley
A brawl inside the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley on Wednesday sent a male inmate and six staff members to local hospitals, said the state Department of Correction. After the unidentified inmate barricaded himself in a room with a staff member shortly after 1 p.m., an emergency response team was activated, Correction Department spokesman Darren Duarte said in a statement. The team used unspecified “less than lethal and chemical responses” to end the incident, Duarte said. The victim and the inmate sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening."
