A few weeks ago, some feared that Governor Charlie Baker was lifting COVID-19 restrictions too soon, but now disease trackers say that Massachusetts appears to be in a good position to hold the deadly coronavirus at bay — and for most fully vaccinated people to return to their normal lives.
In the first week since most state restrictions were lifted, Massachusetts is reporting near-record low numbers of new infections, and more than half of residents are fully vaccinated. Those promising trends are emerging as the state heads into a season where people are more likely to be outside, where fresh, circulating air makes it less likely to breathe in aerosols from someone who is infected.
“At this point we are in nice weather and there is no evidence to suggest we have problematic” new strains of the virus in Massachusetts, said Dr. Joshua Barocas, an infectious diseases specialist at Boston Medical Center. “We also have one of the highest vaccination rates in the whole country, so it’s probably fine for now” for vaccinated people to go about their lives mask-free, but Barocas and others caution that people shouldn’t get complacent: the virus roared back last fall after a deep summertime drop in cases, and huge swaths of the world remain unvaccinated. Today’s vaccines have provided remarkable protection so far, but it’s unclear if they will continue to be effective against future variants, he said.
At the same time, public health leaders warn that significantly lower vaccination rates in communities of color, along with higher numbers of infections, have left people in some pockets of the state far more vulnerable than others.
Barocas, who is vaccinated, said he would feel comfortable eating in a restaurant, as well as walking around without a mask, but he and other physicians noted that millions of Americans with a compromised immune system may still be at risk for serious complications from COVID, despite being vaccinated, and will need to continue taking precautions.

Very few of those breakthrough infections make people seriously ill, and emerging science suggests the amount of virus they’re carrying is likely not enough to infect others.

Baker was bullish about the state’s progress at a briefing on Wednesday. Even though the overall number of vaccinated people continues to rise, infectious disease experts say there may still be a rise in COVID-19 cases in the fall, similar to other respiratory viruses as more people move indoors, but that increase is likely to be far less dramatic than last autumn’s surge.
“The coronavirus may come back to some extent, but not in the levels we had seen,” said Brooke Nichols, assistant professor of global health at Boston University School of Public Health.

“It looks really good right now in Massachusetts but things can change on a dime,” Barocas said, “and we need to have a contingency plan, a return to abnormalcy plan.”

The doses represent an initial tranche of a total of 80 million that President Biden has pledged to send overseas by the end of this month. CAPE TOWN, South Africa — COVID-19 vaccine shipments have ground to “a near halt” in Africa while virus cases have spiked 20 percent over the last two weeks, the World Health Organization said Thursday, a bleak scenario for the continent on both those critical fronts.
South Africa alone saw a more than 60 percent rise in new cases last week as the country with the highest coronavirus caseload in Africa continued to face delays in its effort to roll out the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
More than 1 million J&J doses that should have already been put to use remain on hold at a pharmaceuticals plant in South Africa because of contamination concerns at a US factory. The head of the Africa CDC said he expects an update in the coming days from US federal regulators on those and other doses of J&J, which he called an essential vaccine for Africa because it’s a one-dose shot and doesn’t need the ultra-cold storage facilities required by others.
“The threat of a third wave in Africa is real and rising," WHO Africa director Dr. Matshidiso Moeti said. "Our priority is clear. It’s crucial that we swiftly get vaccines into the arms of Africans at high risk of falling seriously ill and dying of COVID-19.

“While many countries outside Africa have now vaccinated their high-priority groups and are able to even consider vaccinating their children, African countries are unable to even follow up with second doses for high-risk groups."
Moeti repeated Africa’s ongoing plea that richer countries that have reached “significant vaccination coverage” now release their remaining doses. Moeti’s plea came hours before President Biden announced that the US would share some of its vaccines.
Sub-Saharan Africa has on average administered only one vaccine dose per 100 people, Moeti said, compared to a global average of 23 doses per 100 people. Some higher income countries have even reached 62 doses per 100 people, she added.
The issue with contamination of Johnson & Johnson doses at a US facility is a tiny part of the problem, but it’s a crucial one right now for South Africa, which has more than 1.6 million virus cases and more than 56,000 deaths, the most in Africa by far.
South Africa has seen a positivity rate of around 11-12 percent among people tested for the virus in recent days, well above the 5 percent threshold that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said marks “a cause for concern.”
Meanwhile, the country's vaccine rollout has faced a number of hurdles. The country ultimately rejected the first vaccine available over concerns about whether AstraZeneca showed enough efficacy against the variant first detected in South Africa — now referred to by WHO as the beta variant.
If the variant even exists, it is scientifically weaker because that is how a virus survives. It doesn't kill its host because then it also dies.
Now the contamination problems at the Emergent BioSolutions plant in Baltimore earlier this year have directly impacted South Africa's already lagging rollout. South Africa's health department was due to receive 1.1 million J&J doses in May. Another 900,000 were then meant to be delivered at the start of June, according to the government's schedule.
Both batches are in South Africa but remain frustratingly on hold after the US Food and Drug Administration shut down the Emergent plant in mid-April and put a lockdown on any doses that might be linked to it across the world. South Africa has vaccinated only 1.1 million of its 60 million people, and more than half of them have only received one dose of a two-dose vaccine.
Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director John Nkengasong said he was in contact earlier Thursday with J&J officials and they told him an announcement by the FDA was expected Friday or early next week.
On Tuesday, the FDA declined to comment on when it might resolve the concerns over Emergent’s factory, which included poorly trained workers and dirty walls and floors, and led to the immediate discarding of 15 million J&J doses connected to the factory.....

He is most animated by the efforts in Fulton County, Ga., and Maricopa County, Ariz., according to two advisers who, like others interviewed for this report, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private conversations.
Trump’s interest has been fueled by conversations he has had with an array of figures who have publicly touted false claims of election fraud. Among them, according to advisers, is Christina Bobb, a host at the One America News network who has privately discussed the Arizona audit with the former president and his team; Mike Lindell, the chief executive of the company MyPillow; and Pennsylvania state Senator Doug Mastriano, a Republican, who urged the state’s congressional delegation to reject Biden’s victory there last fall.

Powell did not respond to requests for comment. She told CNN on Monday that Flynn had in no way encouraged ’'any act of violence or any military insurrection’' and said that the media had ’'grossly distorted’' his remarks.
The escalating rhetoric by the former president and his backers shows that he is intent on keeping alive the falsehood that the 2020 race was rigged, a claim that critics say has perilous implications for the country and the public’s faith in how they select their leaders.

Panama is struggling to cope with a five-fold increase in migrants who trek for days through its dense southern jungle in the hope of reaching the United States, according to the country’s top diplomat.
The migrants, from as far away as Senegal and Nigeria, are starting to overwhelm Panama's shelters as numbers surge, Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes said.
“The migrant situation has gotten a lot worse,” Mouynes said Wednesday, in an interview in New York. “We give them food, we put them in camps where you do biometric testing and COVID testing. That is fine if you have numbers you can manage, but if all of a sudden you have five times that amount it becomes difficult.”
Just getting us all ready for such eventualities, no doubt, and WHY would they want to come to a racist country built on white supremacism?

The flow of people picked up as travel restrictions eased across the world, after the pandemic increased unemployment and poverty in developing nations. Migrants enter South America in places where visa rules are favorable, then make their way north to Colombia, before crossing into Panama across the dangerous no-man's land known as the Darien Gap.
Mouynes said she is seeking talks with governments in South America to help control the flow, or at least to vaccinate migrants as they travel.
It's a SINGLE-MINDED OBSESSION with the ruling cla$$, and a VERY UNHEALTHY MENTAL ATTITUDE!
The problem is easier to fix than the more visible migration flow toward the United States from the so-called northern triangle nations of El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, Mouynes said.
Latin America has been among the regions worst-hit by the pandemic, both in terms of deaths and in economic damage. Panama has lagged regional peers in its vaccination drive, but Mouynes said the government is targeting a “massive” inoculation program in the third quarter to achieve herd immunity by September.
The government of President Laurentino Cortizo, which took office in 2019, is inoculating elderly and at-risk populations and will begin mass vaccination in July, she said.
Unlike most countries in Latin America, which raced to acquire shots wherever they could, Panama put nearly all its eggs in the basket of Pfizer-BioNTech's vaccine.
Mouynes met with Pfizer during her trip to New York, and said she received assurances that Panama would get the shots it ordered.
"We want Pfizer to recognize that Panama's huge bet on Pfizer in terms of not having this hedge with other pharmaceuticals also leaves us at a bit of a risk if they don't deliver the supply," Mouynes said. "We are targeting mass vaccination in July. If that doesn't happen for us we will be in big trouble."
What is disturbing is Panama is right along the equator and the heat should render viruses nil.
Vaccines could also play a role in regional foreign policy, Mouynes said. Offering shots to Venezuela could be one way to get President Nicolas Maduro to sit down with the opposition. So far, nothing else that's been tried has worked, she added. “The extent of the humanitarian crisis that is going on there is similar to Syria,” she said. “The quicker we recognize that the path we have taken has not been successful, the better, because doing more of what we were doing is not going to make a difference.”
This has reached the level of vomiting offensiveness.

Hardly a political sweater set, the two men, both Army veterans who arrived in the Senate in the mid-1990s, nonetheless often coordinate like one on military matters.
Reed, 71, and Inhofe, 86, have combined to push back against Gillibrand’s legislation and delay any move toward a swift vote, a stance that many of the bill’s backers say shows far more deference to military commanders and committee protocols than justified given the decades of failure in protecting victims in the armed forces.....

For what it is worth, the Metro lead got tangled up in the nets as they dug up some Bish.
Flipping below the fold I found that Janey is on the hot seat as the honeymoon is over a little more than 2 months on the job and the first superPAC weighs in with digital ads promoting Andrea Campbell for mayor of Boston.

"Thousands of Massachusetts day-care providers will be able to regularly screen children and employees for COVID-19 this summer, thanks to a new partnership between the state and a local nonprofit. Neighborhood Villages, a child-care advocacy group, is teaming up with the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care to offer free weekly pooled COVID-19 testing for child-care programs throughout the state. The initiative, which relies on testing kits from the genetic-sequencing company Veritas, will test roughly 6,000 children, teachers, and staff per week throughout the summer, with the potential for expansion in the fall if there is enough demand. In pooled testing, samples from multiple people are tested together to obtain quicker results. If the pool tests negative, all samples are recorded as negative. If the pool tests positive, samples in that pool are tested individually to identify positive cases. The state has offered pooled testing for children and teachers in K-12 schools since February....."
The photo reminds me to tell you to hug your kids and keep them close -- and out of the public school system -- because they tests are manipulated depending on the cycle threshold they are run at, with anything over 35 resulting in a false positive and noninfectious "case."

Rowe Price, Vanguard Group, and BlackRock — that collectively hold 21 percent of Amazon’s shares after Amazon raked in more than $21 billion in profit in 2020, nearly 84 percent more than the year before, as consumers flocked to online shopping sites to avoid going out during the coronavirus pandemic (those record profits “came at the expense of the exploitation of Black and brown folks,” so I guess no white people work there) -- at the SAME TIME that the Globe's front page was extolling what a wonderful landlord is BlackRock!
