And please don't tell me my beloved state-school history professor, bless his heart, LIED TO ME??? He told me Lincoln had all the black leaders into the Oval Office and told 'em they had to kinda, you know, get outta here! Wasn't good for the unity I guess.
I asked what the black leaders said back and he told me they told Lincoln that they arrived here with the Europeans as slaves (odd that we never delved into the "roots" of that particular issue) touched upon and they were just as responsible for
building up the nation as anyone else. This was their home now.
That convinced me the war was fought for more over economic grounds.
That is not to defend slavery; that monstrous treatment of a human being is never to be condoned no matter where it is found. It's just that -- as in all wars -- higher moral callings are espoused when the REAL GOALS are TERRITORY and CONQUEST, LAND and RESOURCES!!!
I'll bet Lincoln is sorry he's not alive today!
