BEIRUT - Two Lebanese men suspected of spying for Israel fled across the heavily fortified border to the Jewish state yesterday, the second such escape since Lebanon stepped up a campaign of arrests against those thought to be working for Israel, officials said.
Authorities arrested two other Lebanese men over the weekend on suspicion of collaborating with Israel, raising the total number of suspected spies arrested in the past few weeks to 15, security officials said. It was unclear how they got past the border fence without triggering the alarms that have alerted Israelis to similar crossings in the past. Lebanese who try to sneak into Israel are normally detained, questioned, and sent back to Lebanon.

Israel's government routinely refuses to discuss its intelligence activities, but Israeli commentator Ronen Bergman, a private expert on security affairs, said reports emerging from Lebanon could signal key errors by Israeli intelligence.
Bergman, author of the new book "The Secret War with Iran," said the details of the network being published in the Lebanese media, and the apparent ease of unraveling the operation "are all signs that are worrisome for Israel."

BEIRUT - Hezbollah yesterday rejected potentially explosive allegations in a published report that it was responsible for the 2005 assassination of former prime minister Rafik Hariri, leader of Lebanon's Sunni community.

Citing an unnamed source close to the United Nations tribunal investigating the murder, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported Saturday that operatives with ties to the leadership of the Shi'ite Muslim militant group and political organization were emerging as the primary suspects in the fiery car bomb explosion that killed Hariri.
Translation: It was an ISRAELI or JEWISH SOURCE!
Hezbollah released a statement yesterday rejecting the report, which emerged two weeks before parliamentary elections, as baseless. The group noted that a Kuwaiti newspaper recently published similar allegations. "It's not the first time that a magazine or newspaper aimed at publishing such fabrications," read a statement carried on the website of Hezbollah's Al Manar television station. "It is nothing more than police fabrications cooked in the same black room that has been keen on fabricating such narratives for over four years."

Representatives for both the tribunal and for Hariri's son, parliamentary leader Saad Hariri, declined to comment. Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman of Israel said the report should lead to the arrest of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, which is engaged in a decadeslong fight against the Jewish state. "An international arrest warrant must be issued for Nasrallah, and he must stand trial," the far-right politician said ahead of an Israeli Cabinet meeting, according to news agencies.

BEIRUT - A Lebanese Army colonel and a senior retired customs officer have been detained on suspicion of spying for Israel, security sources said yesterday.
The army officer was the second colonel arrested in less than a week in an espionage investigation that has produced charges against at least 21 suspects and several confessions, the authorities say. Israel has not commented on the arrests.
Hezbollah, the Iranian- and Syrian-backed military and political group, has called for the death penalty for all suspects convicted of spying for Israel. Hezbollah and Israel fought a 34-day war in 2006. Investigators have displayed what they say is spy gadgetry seized in the course of the inquiry. At least two spies fled to Israel last week, Lebanese authorities have said, and officials have demanded their repatriation.

Senior Lebanese security officials say the arrests have dealt a major blow to Israel's spying networks in Lebanon. They said many of the suspects played key roles in identifying Hezbollah targets that were bombed during the 34-day war.
