Skipping Through Somalia: Pirate Patrol

Arrrrrrrrgh, matey!

"Naval, air blockade urged for Somalia; Action proposed to curb insurgency" by John Heilprin, Associated Press / October 22, 2010

UNITED NATIONS — The African Union sought UN approval yesterday for a naval and air blockade of Somalia, as well as more troops and aid to fend off piracy and terrorism in the struggling Horn of Africa nation.

The AU’s commissioner for peace and security, Ramtane Lamamra, urged the UN Security Council to authorize a blockade while seeking far more international aid and a contingent of 20,000 AU-led troops, up from the current authorization of 8,000. He also asked the council to approve hiring up to 1,680 police officers. The AU peacekeeping force, operating under the UN mandate, now has about 6,000 troops.

With Somalia lacking a fully functioning government since 1991, Lamamra called for a major escalation of troops and other resources to deter the pirates operating off the country’s coast and the Al Qaeda-linked al-Shabab Islamist rebels, who control much of Somalia.

Actually, the Somalis had a functioning government for about 6 months in 2006 after Islamists ran the CIA warlords out. Then the U.S. bribed Ethiopia to invade, overthrow, and occupy.

Specifically, Lamamra requested UN authorization for “a naval blockade and a no-fly zone over Somalia to prevent the entry of foreign fighters into Somalia, as well as flights carrying shipments of weapons and ammunition to armed groups inside Somalia.’’

Then tell Israel to stop running weapons into the region.

The council then met for several hours behind closed doors. Afterward, Uganda’s UN ambassador and the current council president, Ruhakana Rugunda, told reporters that the panel considers the AU’s request for a blockade to be “legitimate’’ but that the members would need to study it further.

Lamamra also sought the 15-nation council’s help in tightening international sanctions against Somalia, and in removing some of the underlying conditions that have led to a boom in piracy by doing something to tackle the illegal fishing and dumping of toxic substances and waste off the coast....

Untold Stories about Somalia Pirates - European ships dump Nuclear Waste into Somalia Ocean

"On December 12, 1991, while serving as chief economist for the World Bank, Summers authored a private memo arguing that the bank should actively encourage the dumping of toxic waste in developing countries, particularly "under populated countries in Africa," which Summers described as "UNDER-polluted."

Pirates set UK couple free after 388 days

Despite an international flotilla of warships and aircraft, pirates continue to prowl the Indian Ocean off Somalia seemingly at will, pouncing on pleasure craft, fishing vessels, and huge cargo ships.

Yeah, that SURE IS ODD, isn't it?

Maybe this will stop them:

"Piracy trial of five Somalis to begin

NORFOLK — Five Somali men accused of firing assault rifles at a Navy ship off the coast of Africa are set to face the first US piracy trial in more than 100 years. The suspects are accused of shooting at the USS Nicholas to plunder what they thought was a merchant ship. The federal trial will begin Tuesday (AP)."

And the verdict:

Court convicts 5 Somali men of piracy
Five Somali men accused of attacking a US Navy ship off Africa's coast were convicted yesterday on federal piracy charges in what the government said was the first piracy conviction in a US courtroom in nearly 200 years.

So WHEN are the ISRAELI PIRATES that KILLED an American going to be TRIED?

The government said the conviction should send a message to pirates who continue to harass merchant ships off the coast of Africa and take hostages.

Must have worked because I haven't seen a word since.

I'll bet they are eating better inside a US prison.
