Congress Neglects Gulf Gusher Restoration

But they fund wars, Wall Street, corporations, and Israel fast enough.

"Task force outlines challenges to cleaning up gulf after BP oil spill" October 06, 2011|By Ramit Plushnick-Masti, Associated Press

HOUSTON - Five coastal states are determined to clean up the damaged Gulf of Mexico ecosystem after last year’s oil disaster highlighted how decades of contamination and deterioration had placed a backbone of the US economy at risk of ruin, according to a federal report released yesterday....

Congress has yet to commit funding to restoration efforts....

The Gulf of Mexico has been in a slow, persistent state of decline for nearly a century, harmed by upstream efforts to make rivers more accessible to ship traffic and prevent Mississippi River flooding. Fertilizers used in Midwest farming also flowed downstream, filling the Gulf with harmful nutrients that have created a large “dead zone’’ where there is so little oxygen nearly nothing can survive.

Yeah, it's almost as if the oil spill and the chemicals dumped in to sink it has had no effect at all.

SIGH!!!

The report says restoring the natural flow of the river, which would allow sediment to flow downstream and strengthen and prevent the erosion of barrier islands and wetlands, is critical. The sediment - nutrient-filled sand and rock that flow from rivers and streams into the ocean - constitutes the structural foundation of the Gulf’s ecosystem.

And never you mind that three-inch layer of gunk at the bottom.
