Sunday Globe Special: Filling Up the Lincoln Pool

And it only cost you $34 million, taxpayers.

"Lincoln reflecting pool rehab nears completion" by Michael E. Ruane  |  Washington Post, August 12, 2012

WASHINGTON — Once the site of winter ice skating and summer toy boat regattas, by 2010 the pool was a fetid wreck, its water off limits to the public. Its old bottom was cracked and leaking 500,000 gallons of city water a week, 30 million gallons a year.

And the water, even when replenished, quickly became fouled with dirt, duck droppings and trash. The pool had to be cleaned two or three times a year, with 10 to 15 truckloads of debris removed each time, according to the Park Service....

Why was it allowed to fall into such disrepair?

After the terrorist attacks of Sept 11, 2001, fears arose that the pool might be an avenue for an attack on the Lincoln Memorial. Dennis M. Quinn, a Park Service civil engineer, said the security aspect ‘‘was probably the biggest driving force in getting this plan approved.’’

(Blog editor is so sick of seeing false flag terror justify everything)

In 2010, the concerns, coupled with government stimulus money through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, made replacement of the pool possible, Quinn said....

It was stimuloot money.
