WASHINGTON - The Peace Corps boasts that it's "the toughest job you'll ever love," but this year, just getting hired may be the toughest part.

At a time when both presidential candidates have pledged to promote and expand national service, the popular humanitarian assistance program that sends thousands of Americans abroad annually is now planning to cut 400 volunteer positions in the face of an unexpected multimillion-dollar budget shortfall.

Translation: There WILL BE a MILITARY DRAFT!!!!

With fewer spots, an increasing number of Peace Corps nominees who were expecting to begin service this fall have seen their deployments delayed at least until next year - and in some cases indefinitely.

I'll bet the SOLDIER SERVING in Iraq wishes he had THAT DEAL, huh?!

And if I ever hear the word "peace" pass any U.S. politicians lips, well, I think I'll GAS 'EM!!

PFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!

"There are more people waiting this time than in years past," said Rosie Mauk, the Peace Corps' associate director of volunteer recruitment and selection.

"The recruiters don't like to tell people that there isn't a spot for them. To have to tell people that they have gotten to know - and they know are passionate about the Peace Corps - that there is just not room for them now is the most difficult part."

Jen Casto, like many aspiring Peace Corps volunteers, applied to the program during her senior year of college at the University of Virginia. Last October the Peace Corps nominated her to a secondary education program in sub-Saharan Africa, with an expected departure this month. "At the end of the interview, [my recruiter] said that I was definitely nominated and that she was going to find me a spot in Africa," Casto said.

Imagine the excitement the kid was feeling -- and how deflating the news must have been!!!

But last month, about six weeks before she was expecting to leave for 27 months of service, Casto received an e-mail informing her that her program was full. "There is just a sense of frustration," said Casto, who turned down several summer internship offers to prepare for deployment.

Ah, WHO CARES if the KID got fucked, huh?!!!!

The Peace Corps usually nominates twice as many people as it needs, so delays are not uncommon. Recruiters also make it clear that a nomination does not guarantee a formal invitation.

But this year, as the agency cuts volunteer positions to save money, a greater number of competitive applicants like Casto, who have spent considerable time and money to join the Peace Corps, are finding themselves sidelined at the last moment.

But they can GET THE WAR LOOT RIGHT THROUGH!!!!!!

And how, oh, how to RECONCILE the CUTS and DISAPPOINTMENTS of our STARRY-EYED YOUTH for what is likely a NON-OFFICIAL COVER SPY PROGRAM (because that's what bidness the Amurkn gummint is in) with THIS LOAD OF BULLCRAP?!!!

(See why you get the anger and rage about the lies, America? The AGENDA-PUSHING GARBAGE NEVER STOPS from the CRIMINAL AMERIKAN JEWSMEDIA!!!!!)

Voila!

"Downturn inspires an uptick in volunteerism" by Associated Press | February 19, 2009

Meghan McCloskey heard the call to service when she was in college, applying to the Peace Corps during her senior year. That call only got louder as she realized her shrinking job options in the faltering economy.

"Just having some sort of security for two years and not going through the job application process every two months and internships until someone wants to pay you is good," said McCloskey, 23, an administrative assistant who completed the Peace Corps application process and is awaiting her country placement.

I hope they don't come back and say SORRY, like they did to that other disappointed girl!

Volunteer organizations such as the Peace Corps and Teach for America say the floundering economy and President Obama's call for service have led to a major increase in applications.

Teach for America received a record 14,000 applications by November, an almost 50 percent increase over the previous year. And Peace Corps applications rose 16 percent from fiscal 2007 to 2008.

When applying to the Peace Corps, most college graduates speak first about their desire to serve. But they also learn a foreign language and gain valuable international experience that can further their future careers, organization spokeswoman Laura Lartigue said. "They come out on the other end with really good skills that make them competitive in the job market," she said.

I THOUGHT it was about HELPING POVERTY-STRICKEN PEOPLE and LEARNING ABOUT THEIR CULTURE!!! Silly me; it's just a STEPPING STOINE nad HOLDING PATTERN for SOME CORPORATE JOB!!!!!!!

Many of this year's applicants got a taste of volunteering while in school, making the thought of spending more than two years serving abroad less daunting, Lartigue said.

Sig Heil!

Michael Brown, chief executive and cofounder of the nonprofit City Year in Boston, said it's not just the sour economy and lack of jobs that's contributed to the jump in volunteerism. His organization, which places young adults as tutors and mentors for schoolchildren for a year, has seen applications jump from about 500 to almost 1,600 year-on-year.

"It's not just a matter of needing employment, which I think is still important, but there's something in a declining economy that clarifies all our values," Brown said. "Young folks are saying, 'I'm needed more than ever because I'm needed in this economy. Now is the time I should go do this.' "

Yeah, that ONE-PERCENT at the TOP continues to GORGE ITSELF while the rest of us eat shit! I notice TRILLION DOLLAR HANDOUTS to BANKS and WAR LOOTERS NEVER COME IN FOR MUCH!

Teach for America recruits heavily at college campuses. Now with banks and investment firms scaling back hiring, more students are considering teaching for two years, spokeswoman Amy Rabinowitz said.

Bowdoin College senior Ashley Fischer applied to Teach for America but also weighed taking a consulting job. When she saw firms weren't hiring, it solidified her decision to teach for two years. Fischer will teach in a Newark, N.J., bilingual classroom next year.

Oh, it's not an ADVENTURE in FAR AWAY PLACES ANYMORE!!

The KID VOLUNTEERS are going to TAKE UP THE SLACK of all the STATE GOVERNMENT CUTS as TAXPAYER DOUGH is SHOVELED OUT THE DOOR to CORPORATIONS!!!

Man, they really soaked the kids' brains in those state-schools. Thank God I got out of 'em (sob).

McCloskey, who thinks she might be placed in sub-Saharan Africa because of her French language skills, said serving those in need abroad is still at the root of her choice.

I think they are CUTTING THAT PROGRAM, no?

You will STAY STATESIDE, little lady!!!
