The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Falmouth says it will participate in a new project to explore the ocean and share the findings with the world through films, interactive gaming, virtual reality displays, and other media projects.

OceanX is an initiative of Dalio Philanthropies, which was set up by hedge fund billionaire Ray Dalio. The idea is to enable explorers and researchers to look into the ocean’s depths and pursue scientific and medical breakthroughs “and then bring all of these wonders back to the wider world through captivating media,” OceanX said in a statement.

“Our mission to explore and understand the ocean has never been more important or urgent,” David Scully, chairman of the board of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, said in the statement, “and we are thrilled to be part of OceanX. I believe that ocean exploration is more exciting and important than space exploration. We are on a mission to show people that.”

There are those that claim that the, you know, are from there.

Rob Munier, vice president of marine facilities and operations at Woods Hole, said the institution’s participation was actually a continuation of a long-term relationship it already had with the Dalio Foundation, working on “a broad range of projects and activities around the world.”

“It’s been a terrific relationship that has provided wonderful opportunities, both for our scientists and scientists for other institutions,” he said in a telephone interview. “What’s changing is the scale and the name of the entity that we’re partnering with.”

OceanX said it has lined up a global group of other partners from the worlds of science, philanthropy, and media.....
