Globe Lemonade Stand

"Suspect sought in robbery of 9-year-old at lemonade stand" Associated Press  August 06, 2018

MONROE, N.C. — A teenager who held up a 9-year-old lemonade stand vendor for $17 was at large Monday, and authorities said they hope to track him through surveillance videos and possible DNA and fingerprint tests.

Neighbors were asked to check their home security cameras for possible clues, said Tony Underwood, a spokesman for the Union County sheriff.

He said a camouflage hat and BB pistol, along with a metal cash box, was found in nearby woods and could be checked for fingerprints and DNA.

The lemonade seller said a teenager wearing a similar hat and a black shirt pointed a black handgun at him and took his cash box Saturday afternoon in Monroe, about 30 miles southeast of Charlotte.

Neighbor Kelly Smith said she noticed the boy’s stand with its yellow sign offering ‘‘organic lemonade’’ at a traffic roundabout as she left to pick up her daughter at taekwondo class.

She said she intended to patronize the boy’s business when she returned, only to find him gone and a half-dozen patrol cars on her street. ‘‘It’s heart-wrenching. That little boy will never be the same,’’ Smith said.

I think he'll be okay.

Resident James Castellano said he bought a drink from the boy Saturday and took one of the boy’s business cards. It describes him as an ‘‘organic lemonade stand operator, designer, dog walker, reptile caregiver, lawn mower, professional ring bearer.’’

Print cut off the bottom of the card!

The 9-year-old set up his lemonade stand again at the neighborhood pool on Sunday and did a brisk business, Smith said.

"11 killed, nearly 70 wounded in Chicago weekend shootings" by Michael Tarm Associated Press  August 06, 2018

CHICAGO — At least 11 people were shot and killed, and about 70 others were wounded over the weekend in Chicago, in a spasm of gun violence that police attributed to gangs, the illegal flow of guns, and sweltering August heat that drew more people outside.

President Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, on Monday turned the crime wave into a political issue, using it to criticize the city’s longtime Democratic leadership.

Even for Chicagoans all too accustomed to violence in parts of the city, the weekend stood out.

Their ‘‘souls are burdened,’’  and ‘‘it is unacceptable.’’

Gang members are using large summer crowds as cover in some cases, police Patrol Chief Fred Waller said Sunday. ‘‘They take advantage of that opportunity and they shoot into a crowd, no matter who they hit,’’ he said.

Police have said violent crime has declined overall in Chicago. Still, antiviolence protesters have blocked highways to voice their outrage.

Echoing comments that Trump himself has made repeatedly about Chicago, Giuliani blamed Emanuel — President Barack Obama’s White House chief of staff — and decades of ‘‘one-party Democratic rule’’ in a series of tweets on Sunday and Monday.

Giuliani, a former New York mayor, also tweeted his support for Chicago’s former police superintendent, Garry McCarthy, calling him a ‘‘policing genius.’’ Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who fired McCarthy in 2015 after the release of dashcam video showing a white police officer shoot a black teenager 16 times.

Giuliani tweeted: ‘‘He can do a lot better than Mayor Emanuel who is fiddling while Chicago burns.’’

Emanuel held a news conference with Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson on Monday to address the latest violence. The mayor had no immediate comment on Giuliani’s attacks, but the violence reports accumulated at a feverish pace Sunday.....
