"UMass Amherst student found dead in pond in Amherst" by Emily Sweeney Globe Staff May 07, 2018
The body of a University of Massachusetts student was found in Puffer’s Pond in Amherst on Friday, according to Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan’s office.
The body of Jacob Johnson, 21, of East Bridgewater, was recovered by several local divers and members of the Massachusetts State Police Dive Team at approximately 5:43 p.m. after having been submerged for several hours, according to Sullivan’s office.
Johnson was a senior journalism major at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and had worked for The Boston Globe as a co-op on the city desk from July to December 2017. He was slated to graduate in December after the fall semester, according to UMass officials.
Cara Appel-Silbaugh, the dean of students at UMass Amherst, sent a note to students and the rest of the campus community on Monday morning informing them of Johnson’s death.
“It is with great sadness that I write today to inform you of the death of Jacob Johnson,’’ she wrote. “During this difficult time, I urge you to reach out for assistance, or direct others as appropriate. On behalf of UMass, we extend our sincere condolences to Jacob’s family and friends who are mourning his untimely death.”
Globe night city editor Kathy McCabe said Johnson was a hard worker who covered an array of stories on the street, including a fire at the Union Oyster House in Boston last August.
“He was intellectually curious,” said McCabe. “He loved to go out on stories. He was interested in business and politics. One of his first assignments was the fire at the Union Oyster House and he got some great quotes from witnesses on the scene.”
Mary Carey, a spokeswoman for the district attorney, said no foul play is suspected and the cause of his death will be determined by the state medical examiner’s office.
Oh, no, that could take forever and even when you get the report its so full of fabrications and lies it has lost any credibility at all (she was demoted with a pay cut but “her duties remain largely the same” and Baker says everything is fine now) that it hardly justifies the $375,000 a year the head of the office is making.
The more you read the Globe, the more you realize state government is nothing more than a political patronage scheme as they hand out the loot to well-connected concerns and corporations.
