"Beach closed after visitors report infection

State officials closed Shannon Beach in Winchester yesterday after 16 recent visitors were diagnosed with a bacterial infection. Those infected, including several children, hail from several different communities, “but the common denominator is that they all visited the beach in past weeks,’’ said Wendy Fox, spokeswoman for the Department of Conservation and Recreation. The disease, shigellosis, is not life-threatening but can cause diarrhea, fever, nausea, stomach cramps, and vomiting, state health officials said.

Glad I'm looking after my friend's cats while he goes to beach with his family next week.

"City under boil order until further notice

Residents of Gloucester are being asked to boil their tap water for at least a minute before drinking it and to discard any ice, juice, formula, or uncooked foods made with the water since Aug. 15. Restaurants are being asked to boil their tap water for at least five minutes, under the order issued by the state, which is effective until further notice, local officials said in a notice posted on the city website.

I won't be going out to eat in Gloucester!

City Health Director Jack Vondras said the problems began because the city is performing maintenance at its main water treatment plant. With the summer’s normally high demand and the recent heat wave, the two other water plants could not keep up. That allowed water pressure to drop and contaminants to seep into the system.

What kind of contaminants?

Fecal?
