"Trying to end watch on sewer pipes; MWRA cites cost of monitoring effect on bays" by Bina Venkataraman, Globe Correspondent | August 6, 2009

.... The authority, hoping to save up to $3 million a year, is proposing to scale back - and, within the next couple of years, to eliminate - its monitoring of water quality and marine life in Massachusetts and Cape Cod bays.

Officials are appealing to state and federal environmental agencies to relax the requirement for environmental monitoring in Deer Island’s permit, pointing to a nine-year record that shows the waste water from the 9.5-mile pipe has had no significant ill effect on coastal ecosystems or marine life....

Oh, yeah, I trust them.

"Tap water found to be contaminated

Residents were instructed yesterday to boil all tap water after the town’s water supply was found to be contaminated with E. coli and other fecal coliform bacteria. The contaminants were discovered in a sample taken Wednesday during routine testing. The Milford Water Co. also advised residents to discard any food, drinks, baby formula, or other items prepared with tap water since Wednesday. Henry Papuga, Milford Water manager, said his company did not get the test results until Saturday because of a communication problem with the laboratory that does the tests. Milford is currently drawing from just one of its five sources of water, Echo Lake Reservoir, which is also the cleanest of its sources, Papuga said. By late yesterday, tests showed that E. coli was no longer a problem. But tap water used for “drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation’’ still needs to be brought to a full boil for at least one minute until further notice, the water company said.

Gives a WHOLE NEW MEANING to the SHIT-EATING GRIN, doesn't it?
