"Menino pushing for police as flaggers; Wants to reverse a Patrick initiative" by Milton J. Valencia, Globe Staff | August 5, 2009

Mayor Thomas M. Menino has proposed reworking state laws governing the use of police details on city roads, a politically sensitive issue that could challenge one of Governor Deval Patrick’s key initiatives.

The mayor submitted a home-rule petition yesterday to the City Council that, with state approval, would require construction projects to have police details on roads that have heavy traffic volume, even if the speed limit is below the 45-mile-per-hour benchmark set by the state.

Oh, I like it.

The proposal, to go before the council today, could effectively eclipse Patrick’s highly touted use of civilian flaggers at certain construction sites, at least in the city, where the state is starting significant road reconstruction projections. Under Patrick’s cost-cutting changes, the state uses civilian flaggers on roads with a speed limit below 45 miles per hour. Police details would still be required on roads with a speed limit above 45 and with more than 4,000 vehicles a day....

Thomas J. Tinlin, the city’s transportation commissioner:

“They know the roads; they know the neighborhoods.’’

Yup!

Patrick pushed the change to civilian flaggers, which took effect last October, as a significant transportation reform that could save the state between $5.7 million and $7.2 million of the $20 million to $25 million spent each year on police details. That estimate did not include the money municipalities spend on paid details.

Need money to pay the police?

5-7 mill is CHUMP CHANGE when you consider what we are GIVING AWAY to Hollywood, failing biotechs, interest payments to banks, etc, etc, etc.

Under the governor’s policy, the state uses civilian flaggers on the slower roads, but also on low-traffic roads where the speed limit may be higher....

The proposal on flaggers is the latest of the mayor’s public disagreements with Patrick, a fellow Democrat. Last week, the mayor came to the defense of Daniel Grabauskas, general manager of the MBTA, who has been under criticism from the Patrick administration.

:-)

Nobody likes this slick s***ter governor anymore!

Tinlin said yesterday that Menino’s move is not meant to be political, but is among ongoing concerns the mayor has expressed over the limited authority the city would have on projects on significant roads.

Who would have ever thought Massachusetts liberalism was fascism, huh?

“We believe we have an obligation to do what we feel is in the best interest of residents in order to preserve public safety,’’ Tinlin said. He said the project “may have merit, but we feel that on our city streets of Boston, it doesn’t meet our needs.’’

Ron MacGillivray, vice president of the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association, said the union would welcome any proposal that would keep police officers on streets. He said he had not seen the mayor’s proposal and that other factors, such as the union’s labor agreement, would dictate when officers would be required to work details.

“We’re favorable to police officers . . . retaining any details,’’ he said, adding that it provides road safety and an increased police presence in neighborhoods. “If you can put an additional 300 to 400 officers into every neighborhood [working details], it’s a great deterrent.’’

Better there than kicking down doors.

And if an EMERGENCY ARISES, then THANK GOD there is a COP THERE!!!!!

Of course, Boston cops have plenty of other things to do, too
:

got time to cruise the strip, bust brothels, hang out in bars, buy drugs, and worry about cellphones while ROBBERIES, RAPES, and MURDERS go UNSOLVED!!!

And that "good Samaritan" you thought you saw?

Earlier this month, police wrapped up a 30-day sting involving plainclothes officers mimicking tourists and other pedestrians. Once they were panhandled, they essentially became victims guaranteed to show up for a trial
