Brief Searches Around New England

Quite a set of briefs I found today:

"Town officials relent on holiday sign

Town officials retreated yesterday on orders to remove a “Merry Christmas’’ sign hanging outside a fire station. “The townspeople have spoken, and they have been heard,’’ Town Manager Mark Rees and Tracy Watson, chairwoman of the Board of Selectmen, said in a joint statement yesterday. The controversy began last month after a local rabbi threatened to sue the town over a town policy that limited a menorah display on the Town Common to one day.

Of course!!! I never want to see a menorah anywhere!!

Officials then ordered the Fire Department greeting, which had hung every December for 50 years, to be taken down, said Fire Chief William Martineau. “We’re happy and thankful it’s all over,’’ Martineau said. “Christmas is for the kids; hopefully we can go back to that now.’’

Tell it to the rabbi. Yup, the *ew prevails again.

Had to waste time searching for the rest!

"Zebra mussels found in Mass. river
LEE, Mass. --State environmental officials say the invasive zebra mussel that was discovered in a Berkshires lake last summer has now been found in two nearby rivers. The Department of Conservation and Recreation said in a report that the fast-reproducing and environmentally destructive mollusk has been found in Laurel Brook and the Housatonic River in Stockbridge. The mussel was discovered for the first time in Massachusetts in Laurel Lake on the Lee-Lenox line last July. The Berkshire Eagle reports that the mussel has probably been in the lake for two or three years and is "firmly established," and it would be impractical to try and eliminate the population. The report also identifies nine other bodies of water in the region that have prime conditions for infestation.

Printed paper version:

"Girl is bitten after teasing chained dog

A 10-year-old girl was hospitalized yesterday after a chained-up dog bit her on the arm, police said. "The girl was teasing the dog on a chain, and it bit her on the arm," said Pepperell police Sergeant Armando Herrera. The boxer bit the girl at about 4 p.m. on Brookline Street, police said. She was taken to Southern new Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, with injuries not believed to be lie-threatening.

Oh, the POLICE SAID, huh?

Globe's web version:

"Pepperell girl, 10, bitten by dog

PEPPERELL -- Police say a 10-year-old girl was taken to a hospital Wednesday afternoon after a dog broke loose from its chain and bit her on the arm as she played in her neighbor's yard. Police and firefighters were called to 16 Brookline St., about 4 p.m., and found the girl suffering bite wounds from a 1-year-old male boxer, police said. The girl was taken to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua. The girl's mother, Jai Wolfe, of 14A Brookline St., said her daughter was next door playing with the neighbor girl in the yard when the dog broke free and bit both of her arms. "It was completely unprovoked," she said....

"Mass. charter school now run by felon

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --A Springfield charter school placed under investigation by state education officials after its test scores spiked dramatically is now being run by a convicted felon. He was sentenced to two years of probation, including a year of house arrest....

And here is one that never made my paper but did make their web:

"Motorist helps police rounding up cows

Interstate 91 South in Springfield was shut down for approximately 30 minutes yesterday to allow State Police to safely remove two cows from the travel lanes.

:-)

The cows, approximately 500 pounds each, had escaped from a trailer that came unlatched and were walking near Exit 8. A motorist who was stuck in traffic offered his help to state troopers, Springfield animal control, and environmental police. Dressed in a cowboy hat and boots, the motorist lassoed one cow, then the other, and was able to guide the animals back into the trailer.

Thanks for the help, Tex!
