BERLIN — Germany’s diplomats were much more deeply involved in carrying out the Holocaust than previously known, according to a report published yesterday about the Foreign Ministry’s Nazi past.
Despite decades-long efforts by ministry employees to present the foreign office as a place of opposition during the Third Reich, the report concluded that diplomats were actually willing participants in the Nazis’ campaign against the Jews — spying on Jewish-German emigrants abroad and actively contributing to the mass murder of Europe’s Jewry until 1945.
And a lot of other people.

His decision was prompted by a public debate over the ministry’s Nazi past, after it became known that the ministry was still publishing well-meaning obituaries about former employees who were committed Nazis....

The American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants welcomed the report and said Germany had “taken an honest and painful look at its past.’’

BERLIN — Germany’s government yesterday proposed criminalizing forced marriage, a tradition that some Muslim immigrant families impose on their children.
Ah, yes, Germany climbs onto to bash-the-Muslims bandwagon.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Cabinet agreed to a proposal that would make forced marriage a crime that can be punished with up to five years in prison....

“Forced marriages are a serious problem in Germany,’’ Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said, adding that by criminalizing them Germany would make clear that this is no longer “a tradition from olden times or different cultures that is . . . tolerable.’’

ATHENS — Greek police foiled four attempted parcel bomb attacks yesterday that allegedly targeted President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and three embassies in Athens. One of the devices exploded at a delivery service, leaving a worker hospitalized with burns.
Motorcycle police later arrested two Greek men, ages 22 and 24, several hundred meters from the blast site in central Athens.
Police said the men were carrying handguns and bullets in waist pouches, and one of them wore a bulletproof vest, a wig, and a baseball cap.
Police said domestic political extremists were suspected, and one of the two men detained had been wanted in connection with an anarchist group. Authorities said the bombs were not particularly powerful, and no link was made with the international mail-bomb plot based in Yemen....

ATHENS — Terrorists unleashed an unprecedented two-day wave of mail bomb attacks in Athens and abroad, with one package reaching the office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel yesterday.
Greek militant groups are suspected of mounting the attacks targeting embassies in Athens and international organizations and foreign leaders abroad.
Amazing how the "terrorists" show up EXACTLY WHEN the Greeks are PISSED as hell at Wall Street banks and the government that allowed them to loot the nation.

If that is confirmed, it would mark a dramatic escalation for organizations that have never before attempted to strike targets abroad.

The campaign used small devices that caused only one injury and minimal damage. But it highlights the difficulty of keeping bombs out of the international delivery system — also a target of Yemen-based militants armed with more powerful and potentially deadly explosives.

Security at all embassies in Athens has been increased and authorities suspended all international mail deliveries from Greece for 48 hours for further checks.
By last evening, at least 11 mail bombs had been detected in the Greek capital — one addressed to French President Nicolas Sarkozy and eight to the embassies of Bulgaria, Russia, Germany, Switzerland, Mexico, Chile, the Netherlands, and Belgium.

Two more were destroyed in controlled explosions at Athens’ international airport — one addressed to the European Union’s highest court in Luxembourg and the other to law enforcement agency Europol in the Netherlands.
I view that as an in-your-face fart, folks.
A suspicious package addressed to Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi was also found on board a private mail courier company plane that took off from Athens airport late yesterday. The plane landed at Bologna airport, where the package was being checked, Greek police said.

CONAKRY, Guinea — Guinea’s election chief called off a weekend presidential runoff yesterday, yet another delay of a tense contest already overshadowed by violent protests and bitter disagreements....
The announcement comes amid growing violence and a UN report alleging human rights violations by Guinean security forces....
During protests this week, security forces fired at unarmed protesters, some at point-blank range, the Geneva-based UN human rights office said in a statement.
One man was killed and at least 62 were wounded during demonstrations in Conakry during the week.
The UN said authorities severely beat protesters and arbitrarily detained an unknown number of people and kept them in undisclosed locations.
They have black site torture chambers just like us, AmeriKa.
Among the victims was a 7-year-old schoolboy who was shot in the head by a stray bullet and remains in a coma.
The statement said some of those responsible for the violence appear to be members of a special police unit charged with safeguarding the election.
A police officer and a human rights worker also described other violent acts by security forces.
The police officer said he saw two of his colleagues rape a young girl. He asked that his name not be used because of the sensitivity of the situation. He said he also saw his colleagues strike a pregnant woman in the stomach, causing bleeding and the possible loss of her baby.
Security forces are a feared presence in Guinea. On Sept. 28, 2009, soldiers sealed off the exits to the national soccer stadium where tens of thousands of protesters had gathered to demand an end to military rule.
The troops entered and opened fire with assault rifles. A UN commission said 156 people were killed or disappeared and at least 109 women were raped or subjected to other forms of sexual violence.
The UN human rights office said some of the latest violence appears to be ethnically motivated.
Diallo is a Peul, the country’s largest ethnic group, which has never had one of its own in power. Last year, the Peul were explicitly targeted during the stadium massacre. Conde is a Malinke — a group heavily represented in the army, as well as in the junta blamed for the massacre.
The UN agency called on political leaders to restrain their supporters, “both within the security forces and among the general population,’’ while respecting their right to assemble and protest peacefully.
Also yesterday, top election official Lounceny Camara was sentenced to a year in prison and a fine of approximately $300 for manipulating the first round of elections, held on June 27.
You can't trust an election anywhere.
Tomorrow’s vote would have been the West African country’s chance to freely elect its own leader for the first time since winning independence from France in 1958.
