The Science of Protest

Buried below the fold it was:

"‘A balancing act’: As marches continue, spread of virus remains a concern; Many epidemiologists see the need for the protests, saying racism is a huge public health issue, but they worry about too many people gathering in close quarters" by Naomi Martin and David Abel Globe Staff, June 4, 2020

After more than two months of lockdowns and social distancing to avoid spreading the coronavirus, the sight of thousands of protesters crowding Boston’s streets and parks may have been jarring to some, but to many in the Black community and their supporters, the threat of spreading COVID-19 didn’t compare to their need to demonstrate against the systemic racism and police brutality faced by Black people.

Daunasia Yancey, the founder of Black Lives Matter Boston, says, “there’s a worldwide revolution happening and we get to be a part of it and it’s beautiful.”

I'm sorry, I don't find fires and broken glass beautiful, nor did the Good Doctor (both of them), and John Whitehead has it right, this is not a Revolution, it’s a blueprint for locking down the nation and I beg the American people to not fall for it!

What is even more distressing is the Globe promoting the “belief that violence is actually a pretty good tool to use against people who don’t agree with their worldview.”

Epidemiologists say they expect virus infections to rise in light of the protests, where people are packed together and chanting or shouting, which can spread more viral droplets, but many said that the protests are vital because of their social justice cause, and that the risks of transmission are reduced because many participants are wearing masks and the crowds are outdoors.

OMFG!

They just destroyed what little is left of their credibility, if they still had a shred of it!

I'm so glad the $cienti$ts approved of these riots, 'er, protests!

To Black epidemiologists, the pandemic shouldn’t be used to push aside the chance at making historic, needed change on racism, said Shawnita Sealy-Jefferson, an Ohio State University epidemiologist and professor. “We have been left with no other choice but to resist,” Sealy-Jefferson said. “Yes, there is a risk of the coronavirus being spread at these protests, but that risk is smaller than the risk of us doing nothing and taking the status quo and taking state-sanctioned murder. The status quo has been responsible for anti-Black racism and killing people for 400 years."

No science there, just hysterical emotionalism of the basest level.

I'm not going to fall for the race-baiting capitalization, and the sophistry regarding who can protest while pinning the blame on the $y$tem and its current citizens who really have nothing to do with any of the 400 years. I wasn't around, although I was alive in the King era.

The contrast, of course, is what happened a few weeks ago and the totally different reaction the $cienti$ts had to protests of another sort.

While George Floyd’s death prompted the protests in dozens of cities, demonstrators also are venting outrage over decades of killings by law enforcement and other manifestations of structural racism — such as the disproportionately high rates among Black Americans for COVID infections, hospitalizations, and deaths.

In Boston, Black residents account for 38 percent of coronavirus cases for which racial data is known, though they make up only 25 percent of the city’s population. As the death rate increased across the state in early April, it surged nearly 40 percent higher in cities and towns with the largest concentrations of people of color compared to those with the least, the Globe reported.

The protests coincide with Massachusetts’ reopening of the economy in phases, which could complicate efforts to determine the cause of any potential surge in new cases, said Helen Jenkins, an epidemiologist at Boston University, and she hoped people wouldn’t stop taking seriously warnings about large gatherings, which she said can become super-spreader events.

Lady, you have GOT TO BE KIDDING!

On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director acknowledged the protests could prompt waves of infections and urged protesters to get tested, echoing the words of officials in Atlanta and New York. It can take a few days after exposure to the virus for someone to test positive for COVID-19, and up to 14 days to give rise to symptoms.

You f**king evil f**ks!

Police use of tear gas or other chemicals that prompt people to cough could further increase risks of transmission, Jenkins said, and arrests could increase the disease spread because people indoors share air, she added.

They are just DOUBLING DOWN on BULLSHIT!

Doctors and professionals all across the world are calling this thing out for the fraud it is, the evidence of lethality has dropped as the caseload numbers and deaths are being jacked up by officialdom who is in REAL TROUBLE!

What they have done is DAMN CRIMINAL, so file a lawsuit now -- and TAKE OF THE DAMN MASKS when OUTSIDE!

Because many protesters are relatively young, they face lower risks of severe complications from COVID, Jenkins said, but they could carry it to others who are older or have underlying medical conditions, so it’s important for them to take precautions.

It may be hard for protesters to keep their masks on and try to remain apart from others due to emotions running high, said Dr. Zandra Kelley, chief medical officer of the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center, one of the state’s largest community health centers.

“I would imagine that in protest situations, that it would be more likely for people to not be thinking about their masks or their social distancing," Kelley said. "That’s certainly a major concern to have these two very unfortunate horrible things going on at the same time.”

Now they are MAKING EXCUSES for THEM!

Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh said the Boston Public Health Commission has provided thousands of face coverings and health resources at the rallies, which he called inspiring.

“Here in Boston, Mr. Floyd’s murder has caused real pain,” Walsh said. “It has brought out real pain that has existed in this city for a long, long time. . . . Change is necessary, but it’s never easy.”

I didn't highlight that over-the-top offensive slop from that crapper.

He is inspired by the change!

Governor Charlie Baker said he appreciates the protesters who are wearing masks, using hand sanitizer, and trying to keep their distance.

The lead criminal-in-charge calls it a “balancing act," this battle between tyranny and liberty.

Some have criticized epidemiologists and other public health officials for not urging people to avoid mass protests, as they have clearly advised the public to distance themselves from other people as much as possible in recent months.

"I’m very aware that people are saying public health professionals are hypocritical for not condemning these protests,” said Julia Marcus, an epidemiologist who studies infectious diseases at Harvard Medical School, “but it’s very complicated. Systemic racism is one of the biggest drivers of poor health in this country. If we make progress on reducing systemic racism, public health risks will decline,” but she acknowledged the potential dangers. “I think the risks need to be communicated,” she said. “I would be surprised if we don’t see some number of new cases from the protests.”

Yeah, the HYPOCRISY is a REAL BUMMER, man! Kind of UNDERCUTS the WHOLE CASE you are MAKING!

I'm sure we will see the numbers of cases and deaths rise. The ma$$ media and criminal authority will simply lie about it like they have the whole time, and it looks like Obummer failed completely!

With thousands of people thronging to Wednesday’s protest on Boston Common, several supporters decided to hand out masks. Two young men spent $90 on 150 surgical masks to give to demonstrators.

Milly Young, 25, of Medford, hand-sewed 100 masks and brought them to the rally.

She was aware that the risks from the virus remained grave, with hundreds of people still being infected every day in Massachusetts.

“I want people to be able to protest safely," she said.....

How about not at all?

"Washington takes on the look of a war zone in Trump’s show of force against protesters" by Jazmine Ulloa Globe Staff, June 4, 2020

WASHINGTON — [President] Donald Trump won the election espousing old notions of law and order, often delivered with a clenched fist, and a rallying promise to build a wall along the southern border. Since taking office, he has embraced the trappings of authority, touting his relationship with police and uniformed sheriffs, summoning military vehicles and jets for a Fourth of July extravaganza, and expressing his admiration of dictators and strongmen.

The turn-in came in the middle of the paragraph, and I had to correct the disrespectful Globe journali$m with the parenthetical addition.

Beyond that, why don't you turn to Beacon Hill and our illustrious governor for that kind of behavior. The daily savaging of the President, despite his faults that will be the death of me, has reached tiresome stages when it comes to the Globe.

Now, as the nation convulses with anger over racism and police brutality, he has put on a show of force in Washington to demonstrate the type of response to protests he’d like to see in other cities should they fail to quell the civil unrest, but how much of it is show in a presidential election year? And how much could actually translate into use of force?

As long as it just a show.

Military and law enforcement officers and experts said the answers to those questions remain fluid, but many called Trump’s actions in response to peaceful protests a potentially dangerous escalation that could eviscerate any progress toward rebuilding trust between law enforcement officers and their communities.

"Perhaps, he hoped that with a little bluster he could bluff his way through this and calm this down,” said Cedric Leighton, a military analyst and former Air Force intelligence officer, “but ... it doesn’t take much for bluster to get out of hand.”

OMG, they are now BLAMING HIM for the PROBLEM!

How low can the f**king Globe go, hey?

Trump first sparked concerns from defense officials on Monday when officers plowed into peaceful protesters at Lafayette Square, gas drifting through the air, as the president delivered a speech in the Rose Garden. Trump urged governors to deploy their National Guard units and said he would invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 to send active duty military troops to cities and states that failed to stop the unrest.

More provocations, as if they are daring him to do it -- and yet he is still restrained, unlike our governor.

He then walked from the White House to St. John’s Church, where a small basement fire had erupted during protests a day earlier, and posed for a photo with some Cabinet members, Bible in hand.
Related: Trump faces backlash after wielding Bible in nod to evangelical base

“You have to dominate or you’ll look like a bunch of jerks, you have to arrest and try people,” Trump had told governors in a call obtained by CNN before the events.

Amid the outcry, the commanding general of the D.C. National Guard on Wednesday ordered an investigation into the use of helicopters to hover over protesters on Monday night. Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper distanced himself from the president, saying troops “should only be used as a matter of last resort and only in the most urgent and dire of situations.”

Finally, someone in government ACTUALLY OBSERVING THAT -- even if he is being subversive to a duly-elected civilian leader.

In a statement in the Atlantic, James Mattis, the Marine general who in December 2018 resigned as Defense secretary in protest of Trump’s Syria policy, called Trump “the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people — does not even pretend to try.”

Other former military officials said the militarization could interfere with decades of work by defense officials to improve the image of the military since the Vietnam War.

“I found it abhorrent, personally as a citizen and a veteran and as someone who spent over a decade in the Pentagon working on how states can use federal forces and resources and use them responsibly,” said Gary Crone, a former deputy prosecutor in Indiana and retired Air Force Reserve colonel with 30 years of military experience.

They are WORRIED about IMAGERY and NOT REALITY!

David Cohen, an associate professor for political science at the University of Akron, said the militarized scene in Washington was not the first time that the US military and the National Guard have swept a city’s streets. Only a month ago, Kent State University held memorials in honor of four students killed in May 1970 when the Ohio National Guard opened fire at a Vietnam War protest, “but you have whole generations of Americans who have never experienced anything like this,” he said. “It is very jarring for people and Americans who are used to their political system being very stable. This is the kind of thing you see in other countries.”

We are all quietly sweating out this like before, and what is odd is there have been no reported cases from Vietnam in my pre$$.

There are several laws — and exceptions in the law — that the president can use to send active duty troops to cities and states or to federalize National Guard members, experts said, but those options, including the Insurrection Act, have been used rarely, most notably to protect Black Americans in Southern states during the civil rights movement.

There is your precedent, right? Reliving history, only it is way worse this time. Weren't looking to vaxx us all then.

Some former military and Pentagon officials on Thursday said they had been alarmed to see Trump announce he was prepared to use the Insurrection Act to clamp down on people demanding that the rights of Black Americans be protected.

Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, an associate professor at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University, said the currents in the initial wave of protests — and Trump’s “show of force response” ― had parallels to past social unrest in Latin American countries, such as Chile, Colombia, and Guatemala, and to protests now in Hong Kong.

In those movements, peaceful demonstrations have been infiltrated by law enforcement and slandered by government propaganda, she said. “What they did is infiltrate the movement in order to justify action in order to justify oppression,” she said.

What they have done is taken the CIA playbook for regime change and brought it to America, and she just blew the whistle on the government frame-ups, instigations, and continuing COINTELPRO efforts that I read about every day.

There is no science to seeing what is plainly in front of you!

She and other experts said Trump’s recent show of force in Washington is similar to his effort to further militarize the US southern border in response to a humanitarian crisis. There, Trump and his administration officials have deployed active duty troops and corralled migrants in a pen under an international bridge for days. Before the 2018 midterm elections, Trump sought to stir the ethnic and racial fears of his base with a militarized response to a caravan of migrants arriving in the United States from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

Gotta keep them out now.

"Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador asked the country to remain calm Thursday a day after health officials announced more than 1,000 new COVID-19 deaths, a figure that was more than double the previous toll reported in a single day. The reason for the sudden jump in deaths was attributable to a number of factors, including confirmation and inclusion of deaths stretching back as far as 25 days, health officials said, but the country is also passing through the epidemic’s most critical moment with a dramatically increasing number of infections. The jump in reported deaths came in the first week after the federal government’s official social-distancing period ended as the president continued a week-long tour trying to reactivate the economy."

That doesn't surprise me at all, and I am prepared to die in defense of liberty and freedom. That's why I'm pounding away here every day without fear. F**k it!

Leighton said the United States could be headed down a dangerous road in taking a military-like approach to policing its cities and states. “It’s pretty slippery,” he said. “Every agency of government has to make sure that each law enforcement agency stays in its own lane.”

Where have you been the last 20 years as they were armed to the teeth with "surplus" weaponry?

Law enforcement officials said the protests should be handled by local authorities. “It should be left up to the local police who train for those types of protests, and they also train for civil unrest,” said Cedric Alexander, the former police chief of Rochester, N.Y., but Trump doesn’t seem to be viewing it that way, at least in Washington. About 1,600 soldiers from Fort Drum and Fort Bragg were flown to military bases near the city, the Defense Department said.

It was the EXACT OPPOSITE in the '60s!

Now the NORTHERN DEMOCRATS are using the SOUTH'S ARGUMENT!

Honestly, you CAN NOT MAKE THIS STUFF UP!

The potential for active-duty troops on the streets of Washington eased on Thursday, as Trump agreed to begin sending home the troops he had ordered to the region, The New York Times reported.

Then WTF was I just reading?

"The US government is requiring the collection of additional demographic details from people tested for COVID-19, including their sex, age, race, and ethnicity. The extra data requirements apply to hospitals and laboratories and are intended to help track the virus’s impact on various racial, age, and regional groups. Currently, only a small segment of public health labs report the age, sex, and race of people who are tested. The requirement comes amid growing concern about the pandemic’s impact on minorities. Federal health officials have previously reported that African-Americans represent a disproportionate share of patients hospitalized for COVID-19. The collection of ZIP code information is also expected to aid in tracking new infections and distributing tests and treatments. The federal requirements take effect in August, though hospitals and labs are encouraged to comply as soon as possible. They must report the testing information within 24 hours, including the type of test used and whether results were positive or negative."

OMFG, they are trying to COMMINGLE the RIOTS, 'er, protests, with COVID!

"The thousands of people protesting the death of George Floyd have a “civic duty” to be tested for the coronavirus and help New York avoid a spike in new cases as it slowly restarts its economy, Governor Andrew Cuomo said Thursday. There’s widespread concern that people packing in tightly for demonstrations, sometimes without faces coverings, could lead to more COVID-19 cases. Cuomo was particularly concerned about daily mass demonstrations in New York City, which is poised to relax some restrictions amid an intense, months-long effort to tame the outbreak. An estimated 20,000 people have demonstrated in New York City alone, the governor said, as he expanded the state’s testing criteria to include people who attended recent protests across the state."

"A malaria drug President Trump took to try to prevent COVID-19 proved ineffective for that in the first large, high-quality study to test it in people in close contact with someone with the disease. Results published by the New England Journal of Medicine show that hydroxychloroquine was no better than placebo pills at preventing illness from the coronavirus."

The study has ALREADY BEEN RETRACTED!

"Three of the authors of a study that found the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine was dangerous for hospitalized COVID-19 patients retracted it Thursday, saying they could ‘‘no longer vouch for the veracity of the primary data sources.’’ The retraction notice was posted by the medical journal Lancet, which had published the study May 22. The study, purportedly based on the health records of almost 100,000 patients around the world, found that hospitalized COVID-19 patients treated with the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine — a drug repeatedly touted by President Trump — had a much higher risk of death and heart problems compared with those who did not receive the drug. It also showed that the drug did not provide a benefit. The study was ‘‘observational,’’ which is less rigorous than a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Almost immediately after the study’s publication, critics raised questions about the data and analysis provided by a private company, Chicago-based Surgisphere and its founder, Sepan Desai. Another study that also relied on the database — one that looked at the effects of blood-pressure medications on patients — also was retracted Thursday, by the New England Journal of Medicine. Desai, who was listed as one of four authors on the study, was not immediately available to comment."

"A Springfield man turned himself in Thursday to Boston police on a warrant alleging he murdered 24-year-old Dashawn Jackson last month in a double shooting in Jamaica Plain, authorities said. Boston police identified the suspect as Rushon Hemingway, 23, who was ordered held without bail at his arraignment Thursday in Roxbury Municipal Court, according to legal filings. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. Hemingway is accused of gunning down Jackson just before 10 p.m. on May 21 in the area of 267 Centre St., according to police. Another man was also shot and suffered non-life threatening injuries police have said. When police arrived on scene to investigate, an officer saw Hemingway “walking away from the scene while attempting to conceal a firearm in the waistband area of his pants,” Boston police have said. “Upon seeing the officer, the suspect took off running with the officer now in pursuit.” He was quickly apprehended and police seized the gun he allegedly discarded as he fled, authorities said. Hemingway was initially charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and resisting arrest, according to a police statement released the day after the slaying. It wasn’t immediately clear what led investigators to charge him with Jackson’s murder. Three other people have also been charged in connection with the case. They are Clifford Jones, 43, of Randolph, charged with unlawful Possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, possession of a large capacity feeding device, and resisting arrest; Tyron Blair-Battiste, 37, of Jamaica Plain, charged with interfering with a police officer and disorderly conduct; and Uhmari Bufford, 25, of Jamaica Plain, charged with interfering with a police officer and disturbing the peace, Boston police said shortly after the killing. Jackson was killed at the Mildred Hailey Apartments, a Jamaica Plain landmark formerly known as the Bromley Heath housing development. Responding to the scene that night, Suffolk DA Rachael Rollins told reporters that that evening was the second anniversary of a double homicide in the development. "The town of Andover has placed a fire lieutenant on leave and hired an outside investigator to review a “concerning situation,” in which the official pulled his SUV into a woman’s driveway while she was getting her mail and told her he wanted to make sure no one was stealing, authorities said. The woman, a person of color, called the lieutenant a “racist white man” when she tweeted out a video clip of the encounter Tuesday. On Twitter, the woman who posted the video wrote that “this racist white man decided to approach me for doing nothing but getting my mail at MY HOME.... he followed me and my friends car recording us and questioned if I lived there. This world is ridiculous.” Town Manager Andrew P. Flanagan and Fire Rescue Chief Michael Mansfield confirmed in a statement that the lieutenant, whom they declined to name on advice of labor counsel, has been placed on “indefinite paid administrative leave,” pending the outcome of the review, under terms of his collective bargaining agreement. “This is an extremely concerning situation, one that demands a full accounting of the facts,” Flanagan said. According to the statement, town officials were notified Wednesday of a video circulating on Twitter that depicts a man, later identified as the lieutenant, interacting with the woman in her driveway. The statement said the woman “questioned why he was in her driveway while she was getting her mail,” and he replied that “he was concerned someone might be stealing from the residence.” Asked if the matter was being investigated as a possible racial profiling incident, a town spokesman said Thursday that it’s “under investigation by an outside investigator who will report on all the facts in a holistic manner.” In the 15-second video, the lieutenant’s SUV can be seen in a driveway as a female voice is heard saying “this is literally none of your business.” The lieutenant says “I’ll go right to the door,” and another voice says the residence is “my sister’s house. I know, I just wanted to make sure someone wasn’t stealing something,” the lieutenant says. “Well that’s none of your [expletive] business,” the second voice is heard to say. Flanagan said in the town’s statement that an investigation is imperative."

I think he was trying to hit on her:

"The FBI on Thursday arrested an Amesbury man with a pending child porn case - in which he allegedly discussed plans to abuse an infant - for keeping Internet-accessible phones and game consoles in his home in violation of his pretrial release, US Attorney Andrew E. Lelling’s office said. In a statement, Lelling’s office identified the man as 30-year-old Thomas Cross. Jane F. Peachy, Cross’s federal public defender, declined to comment, except to say Cross agreed to voluntary detention during a remote hearing Thursday in US District Court in Boston. Cross was initially charged there in November 2018 with possession, receipt, and distribution of child pornography, prosecutors said. He appealed an order of pretrial detention and was released in July 2019 on conditions that he not access the Internet, possess pornographic material, or possess devices that can access the web, according to the statement. Federal agents searched Cross’s home Thursday morning after receiving a cyber tip about “the potential use of social media to exchange child pornography,” the statement said. “Cross was found to be in possession of multiple cell phones and an internet-connected gaming console. The search of those devices is ongoing.” In a court filing Thursday, prosecutors said the review of the devices “may lead the government to seek additional charges.” Cross has pleaded not guilty in the case, in which authorities allege he traded child pornography images online with a woman named Desiree Daigle. She and Cross also discussed a possible in-person meeting with an infant known to her “so that they could sexually abuse the child together,” Lelling’s office said. Daigle is also in custody on related charges, officials said."

Should have read the fine print because now he is dead.

Avalena M. Conway-Coxon and a 22-month-old girl were found unresponsive in Malpass’s home on Aug. 15, 2015, authorities said. Both girls showed symptoms of heat stroke and were taken to UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester, where Avalena was pronounced dead, officials said. The other girl was in critical condition when she arrived at the hospital. Prosecutors said she was in a coma for several weeks and sustained “life-long injuries.” The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was unable to determine the cause of Avalena’s death. The indictments came after a lengthy investigation by State Police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office and Auburn Police."

"A man is facing multiple charges, including a civil rights violation, after he allegedly assaulted an 82-year-old man who was wearing a Trump hat and holding a sign that supported the president in Fall River Tuesday, officials said. Shortly before 5:30 p.m., Charles Chace, 82, of Fall River, was standing on the grass area of a rotary at North Main Street and Airport Road when Aidan Courtright, 27, also of Fall River, parked his car and approached him, according to a Fall River police report filed in court. Police said Courtright screamed “Give me that ******* sign!” as he walked up to Chace, who was wearing a Trump hat and holding a campaign sign supporting Trump’s reelection. Courtright allegedly ripped the sign out of Chace’s hands, tore it in half, and tossed it onto the grass. He then allegedly grabbed Chace’s shirt and knocked the Trump hat off his head before throwing him “violently to the ground," police said. Courtright allegedly kicked Chace with his leather pointed shoes, police said. He then got back into his car and drove away. Officials arrived at the scene and brought Chace to Charlton Memorial Hospital to be evaluated. Police said he had visible bruising on his lower back. “Chace stated that he was targeted because of his political beliefs and that was the reason he was violently attacked along with having his Trump sign torn in half and thrown to the ground," police wrote. “Based on the facts it is valid that Chace was a target of a political hate crime.” Two witnesses saw the incident happen and corroborated Chace’s account, police said. Police canvassed the area and found Courtright’s car parked outside an apartment complex. Courtright would not leave an apartment he was hiding in once officers located him, police said. A police dispatcher contacted Courtright, who then agreed to turn himself in at the Fall River police station, officials said. Courtright was arrested and charged with assault and battery on someone over 60, assault and battery with a deadly weapon, violation of civil rights with injury, and vandalism. He was arraigned Wednesday morning and is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing, according to court documents."

I hope the courts treat him right, and Trump sent out a tweet about it but it was taken down over a copyright claim and labeled propaganda.

"In Boston’s toniest neighborhood, large military presence stands guard; Even in these strange times, the sight this week of armed military personnel filling Boston’s streets has been, for some, jarring" by Dugan Arnett Globe Staff, June 5, 2020

It does not need to be said, of course, that these are strange times. The country finds itself in both the maw of a devastating and deadly pandemic and faced with an equally extraordinary call to action against police brutality and racism toward Black people, but even amid this historic backdrop, the sight this week of armed military personnel from the Massachusetts National Guard filling Boston’s streets has been, for some, jarring.

Martial law always is!

The Massachusetts National Guard arrived in Boston on Sunday, at the request of Governor Charlie Baker. That night, the city experienced what has thus far been the only time that now-daily local protests have devolved into violence. Various businesses throughout the city were broken into and looted, resulting in more than 50 arrests and the hospitalization of at least 27 police and protesters.

Not Trump?

Since then, however, there have been no major issues — not during a massive protest attended by thousands at Franklin Park on Tuesday, and not at any of the various other demonstrations held throughout the city.

Still, the Massachusetts National Guard has been a regular presence in Downtown Crossing and Back Bay and around the Common, even as some worry that it might further inflame tensions.

I don't think they are going away, either.

Indeed, even as President Trump has threatened to send troops into states to tamp down protests, some local officials have gone the other way, seeking to remove outside enforcement agencies from their cities.

In a letter to the president on Thursday, Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington D.C., requested that all “extraordinary federal law enforcement and military presence” be removed from the city.

“The deployment of federal law enforcement personnel and equipment are inflaming demonstrators and adding to the grievances of those who, by and large, are peacefully protesting for change,” Bowser wrote.

Isn't she being subversive?

During his scheduled meeting with the media Friday, Baker praised the state’s efforts to keep the peace, but Jason Dempsey, a retired Army officer and adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, said that inserting the National Guard into the current situation puts its members in a “horrible” position.

The $tink tank is part of the $hadow government!

The National Guard is a reserve military force made up largely of part-time service members. With units in every state, the Guard can be called upon by governors or the president, and while they can be deployed overseas, guardsmen primarily operate in the state where they live.

Though unaffiliated with law enforcement, and on scene to maintain peace, “it’s hard to avoid the symbolism that they’re being brought in to [contribute to] those very injustices that the people are protesting,” Dempsey said.

“The military in America has a very distinct and specific role, because they focus on external enemies,” he added. “Once you start getting involved with internal disputes and protests, and taking sides, then you put the military’s reputation and professionalism at risk.”

It's not like they have never been called out before!

The mere presence of unfamiliar forces on city streets, some said, might add to the general anxieties that many across America are facing.

“This is a very traumatic moment for the country, and people are not used to seeing these heavily militarized presence in their environment, and it’s confusing, I think, to some people — what that means and represents,” said Dr. Risa Brooks, a political science professor at Marquette University.

Is it?

How long the state’s National Guard might remain in Boston is unclear; a spokeswoman for Baker’s office did not address the question on Friday, and a spokesman for the state National Guard said the timeline for the Guard’s stay is not definitive.

“It’s based on the need,” said the spokesman. “As the need continues to exist, we’ll continue to be committed to the people of the Commonwealth.”

In the meantime, residents are continuing to adjust to what is quickly becoming a new normal.

"Why most Americans support the protests" by Giovanni Russonello New York Times, June 5, 2020

Beyond the scenes of protest and resistance playing out in cities across the country, a movement of a different sort has taken hold.

The American public’s viewon the pervasiveness of racism have taken a hard leftward turn over the past few years. Never before in the history of modern polling have Americans expressed such widespread agreement that racial discrimination plays a role in policing — and in society at large.

So says the New York Times!

FLASHBACK:

"Progressive policy ideas have dominated the early stages of the Democratic primary campaign, but Democratic voters may be seeking more moderate options. Only 1 in 4 Democratic voters said they would favor eliminating private health insurance and replacing it with a government-run plan — the centerpiece of the “Medicare for All” proposals put forward by Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, and only 1 in 3 favors making public college tuition free for all Americans regardless of income, another idea shared by the two leading progressives in the race. Those results, from a survey conducted this month for The New York Times by the online research firm SurveyMonkey, are striking because past polls, including those from the Timeshave shown broad-based support for progressive ideas among Democrats. Last month, 81 percent of Democrats said they approved of Medicare for All; in July, 82 percent said they supported making public colleges free for all, but those earlier surveys asked simple yes-or-no questions. The most recent survey offered respondents more options to choose from, and it found that Democratic voters consistently preferred policies that were well to the left of current law but were more moderate than those proposed by Sanders and Warren. Most Democrats, for example — 58 percent — said they would like to make government-run insurance universally available while allowing people to keep their private insurance if they prefer it, a policy similar to the “Medicare for all who want it” plan proposed by Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Ind., and a related proposal from former vice president Joe Biden. The preference for more moderate policies cuts across age groups, races, education levels, and even ideology: Among Democrats who said they were “liberal” or “very liberal,” only 30 percent chose the most progressive option for health care reform. The Times survey showed similar results when it came to “free college” proposals......"

One hardly knows where to begin with that steaming swirly of perception management and narrative creation. So within a month, the 80% of the people that make up the Democratic voting block abandoned incredibly popular programs because of a poll the New York Times commissioned, and two months later everyone is on board with Biden?

Driven by the Black Lives Matter movement, this shift has primed the country for a new groundswell, one that has quickly earned the sympathy of most Americans, polling shows. As a result, in less than two weeks, it has already forced local governments and national politicians to make tangible policy commitments.

In a Monmouth University poll released this week, 76 percent of Americans — including 71 percent of white people — called racism and discrimination “a big problem” in the United States. That’s a 26-percentage-point spike since 2015. In the poll, 57 percent of Americans said demonstrators’ anger was fully justified, and another 21 percent called it somewhat justified.

So says the lying, agenda-pushing New York Times quoting some $hit poll, and Trump did better among blacks than Romney, et al, in 2016. The economy that was destroyed by COVID counted record low unemployment amongst blacks so..... not anymore!

In the Monmouth poll and in another released this week by CBS News, exactly 57 percent of Americans said police officers were generally more likely to treat black people unfairly than to mistreat white people. In both surveys, about half of white people said so. This was a drastic change, particularly for white Americans, who have not historically said they believed that black people continued to face pervasive discrimination.

At least the races are equal again as far as the capitalizations, and even blacks are saying they are generally not mistreated by most police.

This whole thing is a globalist agenda being promoted by my pre$$, and it's disgusting.

“There’s definitely been a seismic shift in the country,” said Steve Phillips, a civil rights lawyer and political analyst who founded the advocacy group Democracy in Color.

He pointed to what might have sounded like a radical demand just a few years ago — cutting funding for police departments and redirecting it toward social services — and noted that it has now been openly embraced by some mayors and police chiefs in cities including Los Angeles. “I was interested to see how that would play itself out, and now they’re doing it; it’s actually happening,” Phillips said.

They won't need local police once we have all been vaxxed and chipped and under 24-7-365 surveillance, and besides, they won't have any money next year.

Also this week, lawmakers in Washington have pushed to end a program that sends military equipment to local police departments, and House Democrats have vowed to unveil a sweeping police reform bill by next week. On the campaign trail, Joe Biden on Tuesday said that if elected president, he would immediately set up a national police oversight commission.

In 2009, the year President Obama took office, just 36 percent of white Americans said the country needed to do more to ensure that black people gained equal rights, according to a Pew Research Center poll. By 2017, four years after the start of the Black Lives Matter movement, that number had leapt to 54 percent of white people and roughly 3 in 5 Americans overall.

Sixty-one percent of the country in that poll said it supported Black Lives Matter.

While polls can tell us only what people say they believe — and could therefore be affected by a respondent’s desire to sound politically correct — a 2018 study by two social psychologists determined that even people’s implicit attitudes had shifted during the Black Lives Matter movement.

More quacks, and if they call me I will give them a piece of my mind.

In this case, as in so many others, Trump’s combative brand of politics tends to draw clear dividing lines: Whether you support him will usually coincide fairly cleanly with your stance on any number of issues. Yet throughout his presidency, he has commanded a minority coalition. That’s certainly true now, with his approval rating stuck in the low 40s.

I saw someone flying high above that commented on minority governments.

As he embraces harsh tactics against protesters and seeks to label many of those fighting for racial justice as “domestic terrorists,” he has helped force a commitment one way or the other, and for the moment, a large and growing majority appears to be choosing the other side......

Look at the labeling projection being done by the New York Times!

"Churning US protests over the death of George Floyd have revived anger in France over police violence, systemic racism, and the complicated case of Adama Traore, a Black Frenchman who died in police custody in July 2016. More than 20,000 people flouted a police ban and protested vociferously Tuesday in Paris to call for justice for both Traore and Floyd, and similar protests are planned around France this weekend. Traore’s family believe three police officers piled on top of him and pinned him to the ground on his stomach after his arrest, and he was asphyxiated. Lawyers for the officers deny police were at fault, and it remains unclear exactly at what moment, or where, he died. Unlike with Floyd, there is no video or recording, which has made judging the case harder. Four years later, no one has been charged."

"Brazil is now No. 3 in the world for confirmed deaths related to covid-19, after it surpassed Italy on Thursday to trail only the United States and United Kingdom in the bleak official fatality number. Brazil reported 1,437 deaths in the previous 24 hours on Thursday, raising the country’s official toll to 34,021 people dead because of the novel coronavirus. Along with Brazil’s surging cases, nearby Mexico is also suffering a deadly spike: On Wednesday it hit a new high of over 1,000 people dead from the disease in just one day. Public health workers worldwide agree that official death counts are only a snapshot of actual coronavirus-related fatalities due to limits in reporting and testing, but Brazil’s case has particularly alarmed experts because of President Jair Bolsonaro’s persistent belittling of the coronavirus and refusal to implement centralized shutdowns or other measures to curb its spread. The World Health Organization has labeled Latin America as the global pandemic’s latest epicenter. As the Washington Post has reported, young people in Brazil are dying at far higher rates than in some other countries of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus."

They are attacking the hero Bolsonaro as the COVID $camdemic swings South and migrates from Italy.

Mexico has other problems as well:

"Authorities in western Mexico arrested three police officers, including the commissioner, and took over their local police department Friday in connection with the alleged beating death of a man in police custody. The killing of Giovanni López in Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, Jalisco last month spurred violent protests in Guadalajara Thursday evening. Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro called the killing an “atrocity” and promised to clear up the case, but also asserted that the sudden backlash was politically motivated. A video circulated on social media this week shows a man being wrestled into a police vehicle while onlookers shout at police that he had done nothing wrong."

Time to hit the streets again:

"A Massachusetts state trooper on Friday morning shot a Vermont man who was wanted in his home state for carjacking, after the suspect allegedly drove a truck at the trooper in Shelburne Falls, authorities said. Massachusetts State Police identified the man as Daniel Williams, 33, of South Burlington, Vermont. He is receiving “emergency treatment” at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, State Police said. Williams was released from the hospital and transferred to the State Police barracks in Shelburne Falls for booking, State Police Spokesman Dave Procopio said in an e-mail Friday evening. He will be transferred to the county jail where he will be held pending arraignment. It was not immediately clear Friday evening what charges Williams will face. Troopers were alerted that Vermont authorities were seeking a Ford F-150 occupied by a white male, later identified as Williams, in a carjacking incident in their state, State Police said in a statement. Troopers learned Williams had driven into their state, the statement said, and the truck was spotted traveling on Route 2 East heading toward Shelburne Falls, a Western Massachusetts village spanning the towns of Shelburne and Buckland. Shortly before 9 a.m., the statement said, a trooper positioned to the east of the approaching truck, near the Buckland-Shelburne line, started to lay a tire deflation device on the road to disable the vehicle. Williams allegedly failed to stop and drove toward the trooper. “Preliminary investigation indicates that as the Trooper was in the process of laying down the deflation device, the suspect vehicle approached and drove at him as he stood on the road,” the statement said. “The Trooper discharged his service weapon and struck the operator." Williams, the statement said, kept driving for several more miles on damaged tires before the truck came to a stop on Route 2 in Greenfield, where he was taken into custody. “The suspect was transported to Baystate Medical Center where he remains at this hour receiving emergency treatment,” the statement said. “The investigation into the incident is ongoing and is being conducted by State Police detectives with assistance from MSP Crime Scene Services and Ballistics units. As in all police-involved shootings, the incident will he reviewed by the district attorney.” The trooper involved in the incident has been given several days leave, as is customary with all police-involved-shootings, Procopio said. “We are grateful that our Trooper was not injured,” Procopio said."
