"Seaplane with 2 aboard crashes on pond

Law enforcement officials say both occupants survived when a seaplane crashed in Naples, Maine. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department said the plane crashed on Brandy Pond at 2:15 p.m. yesterday. It wasn’t known if anyone was injured. WMTW-TV said crews worked to contain fuel leaking from the plane (AP)."

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Department has identified the two people who were killed in a small plane crash in southern Maine over the weekend. Officials said Monday the pilot was 68-year-old George A. Fortin, of Naples, and his passenger was 73-year-old Anatole "Tony" Kalinuk, of Harrison. The BC-12 Taylorcraft, which was reported overdue Saturday night, wasn't found until the following morning, in a wooded area of Harrison. Officials say it appears the pilot might have struck some trees while attempting to land in a field. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

"Maine gets $500K grants for data projects

The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety has received a half million-dollar federal grant that will be used on several data-related projects. Highway Safety Director Lauren Stewart said the money will fund improvements to Maine's crash reporting system and an electronic program to monitor and tabulate motor vehicle violations and summonses. Another project will collect data from ambulance calls in Maine. The funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation is a continuation of grants awarded to Maine to update the reports that monitor and analyze motor vehicle crashes.

"Police crack down on impaired driving in Maine

Police throughout Maine are continuing their stepped-up drunken driving enforcement efforts over the Labor Day weekend. According to the Maine State Police, 78 police departments are sharing $545,000 in federal funding to pay for the overtime costs of extra patrols on the lookout for impaired drivers. The campaign began Aug. 20. Officials say the crackdown in Maine coincides with a national campaign -- Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. -- that aims to get drunk drivers off the road. State police also plan to have extra troopers patrolling the roads during the holiday weekend looking for aggressive and impaired drivers.

"Mass. man hurt in ATV crash

The Maine Warden Service says a 42-year-old Massachusetts man was critically injured when he traveled off a private road on a four-wheel ATV and struck a tree in Dresden. Michael Murphy of Mashpee, Mass., was taken by LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he remained in critical condition Thursday.
