The middle path in such a conflict is often the least satisfying politically. It risks the least and promises a more distant reward. But Afghanistan is a unique situation - a potential threat to American security but not the only one, or even the biggest one, in an increasingly dangerous world.

Pursuing the clear and honorable goal of maintaining stability while risking as few troops as possible is not the kind of strategy that gets trumpeted through the ages. But it’s the best course for this moment in Afghanistan.
