"Display of flag causes uproar; Neighbor, veterans call upside-down banner an insult" by Milton Valencia, Globe Staff | August 6, 2009

They may have a point here. Thanks for driving the division, Globe.

Rockland residents and war veterans from across the state are rallying around the mother of a dead soldier who looks outside her living room window every day to see an American flag hanging upside down.

“It’s right in my face; it can’t get any closer,’’ said Maureen O’Haire, calling the display a disgrace to her son and anyone who has worn a military uniform.

When her son Walter O’Haire, a 20-year-old Marine, was killed in Iraq in 2007, she saw an outpouring of support from her community. Since the flag appeared across from her Union Street home, she has seen a renewal of that support.

Kevin McGee, the owner of a used-car lot across from O’Haire’s home, says he turned the flag upside down in what he has called a sign of distress, a protest of town officials’ refusal to renew his license for his car lot.... McGee said that the flag was not a sign of disrespect, calling it an appropriate sign of distress.

The dispute stems from the refusal of Rockland officials to renew McGee’s license until he pays an outstanding tax debt of about $2,000. Officials have said the town will renew McGee’s license once the taxes are paid and have even offered to enter into a payment plan, said James Simpson, chairman of the town’s Board of Selectmen.

Taxes are already WAY, WAY, WAY too high, and given he way the politicians handle the money, I don't believe in taxes anymore. If you have to have 'em, the MORE LOCAL the BETTER!!!!!!!

The dispute has led to McGee’s decision to use the flag as a sign of distress, a move challenged by the town, veterans groups, and O’Haire. However, the town cannot dictate how McGee flies the flag, a constitutionally protected right. O’Haire said she does not want to infringe on anyone’s rights. But pointing out that the town has seen two servicemen killed in Iraq in the last two years and that other area towns have lost servicemen as well, she said she hoped McGee would find a new way to express his dispute with the town.

“Stop disrespecting the men and women who have died for this country,’’ she said.

But PUT UP with the UNENDING LYING and WAR LOOTING, lady?

If you had LISTENED to PEOPLE LIKE ME then your son would still be above.

What is DISRESPECTING THEM is NOT GIVING THEM the COVERAGE, CARE and RESPECT they deserve when they GET BACK!!
