"Celebration centers on Washington letter

A letter George Washington wrote to the Jewish community of Newport will be read aloud today at Touro Synagogue, the oldest synagogue building in the United States. The letter from 1790 affirmed the importance of religious tolerance and declared that bigotry would not be tolerated by the new government. A copy is on display at a new $12 million visitors center next to the synagogue (AP)."
