"Violence erupts on Greek riot anniversary" by Associated Press | December 7, 2009

ATHENS - Masked youths hurled firebombs and chunks of marble at law enforcement during a march in Athens yesterday to mark the first anniversary of the police shooting of a teenager whose death sparked massive riots.

Police fired volleys of tear gas to disperse the youths in running street battles in the center of the capital as several thousand demonstrators commemorated the death of Alexandros Grigoropoulos, 15. The teenager’s death sent youths rampaging through cities for two weeks last December. Yesterday, the rioters smashed bank windows, overturned trash bins, and set them afire as they hurled rocks and firecrackers at riot police. Authorities said 177 people were detained for public order offenses in Athens and another 103 in the northern city of Thessaloniki, where a similar demonstration turned violent.

Police also clashed with protesters in the southern city of Patras and the northwestern city of Ioannina. At least five protesters and 16 police were injured in the violence, police said. Police on motorcycles chased rioters amid scenes of chaos at Syntagma Square in Athens, with youths punching and kicking officers pushed off their bikes. At Athens University, masked protesters broke into the building and pulled down a Greek flag, replacing it with a black-and-red anarchist banner.

That LAST WORD was a HUGE CLUE!!!!

The second day of coverage by the agenda-pushing papers confirms my suspicions.

ATHENS - Masked youths smashed store windows and hurled rocks and firebombs at riot police who responded with tear gas yesterday in a second day of violence during commemorations of last year’s fatal police shooting of a teenager.

NONE of this WINS PUBLIC SUPPORT, and CUI BONO by making a protest look bad?

The death of 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos led to some of the worst rioting Greece had ever seen, with gangs of youths smashing, looting and burning stores in cities across the country for two weeks last year, protesting heavy-handed police tactics.

Well, they GOT a CHANGE in GOVERNMENT so WHY the VIOLENCE, 'eh?

Yesterday’s clashes broke out during a demonstration by about 3,000 people, mostly high school students, through the center of Athens. Several dozen youths at the end of the march attacked riot police with rocks, firebombs, and firecrackers, smashing some of the bus stops, telephone booths, and storefronts not damaged in Sunday’s demonstration.

This begins to STINK of PROVOCATION, readers!

Protesters injured a passerby who attempted to intervene, beating the middle-aged man unconscious.

Is that going to WIN THEM PUBLIC SUPPORT?

Police detained at least three youths. Demonstrators also scrawled antipolice graffiti and stenciled a photograph of Grigoropoulos on store windows and walls along the demonstration route, while others set fire to garbage cans overflowing due to a strike by municipal workers.

Police said 784 people had been detained, including 136 people who were arrested, for public order offenses in connection with the demonstrations across Greece during the 48 hours from Saturday until early yesterday. Among those detained were 58 foreigners, including people from Turkey, France, Germany, Italy, and Albania.

Oh, FOREIGN AGENTS helping to RAISE HOLY HELL?

I've seen this movie before.

Considering the paucity of stories the BG gives me about Greece my view would be totally skewed about what is occurring in that nation.

Did the fires ever get put out?
