A few weeks back, Daniel G. Smith told relatives in Florida he was going on a road trip — “kind of an adventure” — with a friend he had met at work, a journey that would give the 35-year-old Easton native a chance to see parts of the country for the first time.

The men were to travel in Smith’s 2016 Mazda 3 and pay for the trip by picking up odd jobs along the way. The tall, wiry Smith was confident his skills as a carpenter, roofer, and office furniture installer would be in demand as they traveled north toward New England, his relatives said.

Smith was shot Nov. 8.

“It’s really baffling right now,’’ Smith’s stepfather, Ronald R. Renshaw, said Monday from his home in Lehigh Acres in Florida. “They had been traveling together for maybe five or six weeks. They were pretty much enjoying themselves. And I thought they got along real well. I thought they were friends.’’

He added, “It was kind of an adventure.’’

Smith, he said, was a beer drinker who never had an interest in marijuana, had found steady work in Florida over the past five years, and had only recently broken up with a longtime girlfriend.

There was nothing in his stepson’s life to suggest that a trip with a friend would end with Smith being murdered near a spot he often went fishing with his father as a child....
